What appears to be a centuries-old paved or cobbled Fording Point has been extensively revealed recently adjacent the Castle Bridge and Keep on the Crana river estuary.
Due to the force of recent flash flood in our area this interesting structure has become extensively uncovered as the photo shows. The Keep dates from the 13th Century and the Castle Bridge was built by Henry Vaughan in 1718. We also know that the town of Buncrana finds its origins on this west bank of the Crana River, therefore it is safe to assume that this fording point pre-dates the Castle Bridge which is three hundred years old next year.
This structure will be of interest to our local community and archaeologists alike and substantially add to the historical story of our local area as well as providing an insight into our cultural history.
